A DC native, I am a Landon Bear (’00), Duke Blue Devil (’04) and Johns Hopkins Blue Jay (’07 MA Writing). My college advisor career counseled me to find an intersection of passion and ability. I wanted to teach, travel, write and start a business, and somehow Top Score Education emerged from that primordial ooze. A company (Metropolitan Counseling Associates) contracted me during grad school to start an SAT/ACT program for them, including the creation of a 220 page manual (Question the Answers). Since leaving that nest and building my own brand (Top Score), I have tutored more than 1000 students personally and overseen the programs of 1000 more, with students from DC to Tennessee to Dominica to London to Switzerland.
In an act of scholarly masochism, I take the SAT and ACT every two years with the students to stay current and show solidarity—since 2008, on each ACT I have missed 0 of 215 questions for a perfect 36 composite score and a perfect score on every SAT. But mastering these tests provoked new questions. My obsession with learning led me to scrutinize why young students aren’t taught critical thinking and creative exploration and why adults assume they’ve mastered those skills (spoiler alert—we haven’t). The Scout and Aleph programs were born for youngsters precocious or struggling, adults well-read or out of touch.
I have written for several area magazines and newspapers, including the Washingtonian magazine, the Georgetowner and Downtowner newspapers, Towerview Magazine, and the Potomac Review, and am currently writing a historical fiction novel about the Spanish Civil War and the city of Barcelona. I spend 3 weeks each June writing in and about a foreign city between diaper changes of my baby boy Julian, but am always connected via email and international cell phone. I played football and captained baseball at Landon and at Duke (Junior Varsity) and thus understand the demands of sports programs in the area.
I love education and this company, and you will see it permeate through everything we do.
